Trip Information

With its renowned on-board meal service, luxurious Pullman-staffed sleeping accommodations, and rapid transit time between New York and Chicago, the Pennsylvania Railroad’s famous Broadway Limited represented the pinnacle of cross-country rail travel. Between 1912 and 1995, the Broadway Limited carried millions of passengers across America’s steel-railed highways. The train reached its peak of opulence with the 1949 delivery of all-new streamlined passenger cars, sporting the latest in mid-century design and postwar style.

Now a distant memory, the history of the 1949 Broadway Limited is preserved by railroaders and railroad enthusiasts. Several of the streamlined 1949 passenger cars have been preserved across the country by private operators, while the most famous landmark along the original route - the world-famous Horseshoe Curve in Altoona - is visible to millions of people worldwide on the online streaming platform provided by Virtual Railfan.

On the weekend of October 15th through 17th, 14 passengers will have the unique opportunity to travel along with Virtual Railfan’s staff on the original route of the Broadway Limited from New York to Pittsburgh and return on a meticulously-restored original railcar from the 1949 Broadway Limited trainset.

Passengers aboard the 2021 Whistle Stop Tour will ride in first-class style aboard the Catalpa Falls, a 1949 Pennsylvania Railroad sleeper-lounge that is now privately owned by Executive Rail. The trip will traverse several significant railroading sites, including Philadelphia’s iconic 30th Street Station, the Rockville Bridge (a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark), and of course, the famous Horseshoe Curve. Riders will be treated to authentic 1949 cuisine, lifted from the original Broadway Limited menus and prepared to the original Pennsylvania Railroad recipes.
